The Murray Region is located in the north of Victoria, along the Murray river.
The Murray River is the second-longest river in Australia.
Along the Murray there are number of wonderful towns to visit.
In Victoria, the Murray region includes river-side towns
and cities stretching from Mildura to Albury-Wodonga.
These places offer visitors a wonderful variety of sightseeing
opportunities and attractions that are sure to please.
If you enjoy camping, fishing, or just having fun on the water, the Murray region
makes a perfect holiday destination.
You can enjoy fine restaurants and wineries in the towns along the Murray.
And while you are there, take a steamboat cruise and re-live the sights and sounds
of 19th century Australia.
Mildura
The city of Mildura is located on the Victorian side of the Murray River in the
upper northwestern corner of Victoria.
Notable for its irrigated vineyards and fruit-growing farms, Mildura is best described as an inland oasis.
You can enjoy a mild climate here with fine eateries, and farmers markets during
your stay in Mildura.
You can also explore the Murray River on a historic paddleboat or choose to
enjoy a meal at Stefano’s, one of Australia’s most famous restaurants.
Swan Hill
Further down the river is Swan Hill, another river-side town with some
interesting attractions and sights. The Pioneer Settlement, located at the junction of the Murray and little
Murray Rivers, is a recreation of a 19th century town, complete with
authentic buildings from that era.
When the explorers, Burke and Wills, passed through Swan Hill in 1860,
they planted a fig tree that can still be seen today on Curlewis street in the town.
Echuca
Another popular destination on the Murray River is Echuca,
which is pretty much directly north of Melbourne.
During the mid-1800s, Echuca was a bustling inland port,
with paddle steamers regularly transporting supplies into Australia’s interior regions.
You need to take a paddle steamer cruise when you are there, so that you can gain an appreciation
for this unique aspect of the town’s past.
Go to the wharf and see the historic buildings, museums and take a cruise !
Wodonga
Our final stop is Albury-Wodonga, an urban area consisting of twin cities on
opposite sides of the Murray River.
Albury is in New South Wales and Wodonga is in Victoria.
It is one of the larger inland communities in Australia.
Visitors to Albury-Wodonga can enjoy a wide range of exciting activities,
including white-water rafting, visiting a gold mine, and enjoying the area’s excellent wineries.
